Dear Friends and Neighbours,

Holy Rosary did it! We passed the City of Ottawa inspection for occupancy this week. This means that Matthew House can move in, set up and start to help refugee claimants very soon. A huge thank you to Dennis Kam and the parish army of volunteers who made it happen. You helped us cross that major hurdle. There is another hurdle in October to complete the Rectory House project. We are so close to completion. There will be a meeting with Matthew House next week; so more details soon.

This weekend marks an important time in our parish history! It is the National Day for the British Home Children (BHC) also, officially recognized by the City of Ottawa on Saturday, September 28th between 8 - 10,000 Catholic children from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales were sent over to Canada to our property known then as the New Orpington Lodge (1895-1901) and later renamed St Georges' Receiving Home. The property later became Queen of the Most Holy Rosary parish. Some were orphans, some were unable to be cared for or abandoned by their families under the harsh circumstances of the Victorian Era. Remember there were no social services in those days.

Between 1869 and 1948 over 100,000 children of all ages were brought to Canadian shores from the UK. They were sent to work on Canadian farms and in Canadian households. This is a significant part of the history of Canada and the United Kingdom, yet it is still vastly unknown and also holds many painful memories for the children. Despite this harsh situation, we hear memories of bobbing for apples, walking to Mass at St Francois d'Assise and the Sisters desperately writing letters to track down young men who had volunteered to fight in World War One. These British Home Children contributed immensely to the fabric of Canada. Please join us as we pray for the British Home Children, their parents, their descendants and all those priests and sisters who cared for these children. We recognize them and thank them!

New Ramp Update: The Parish Finance Council has approved a construction contract for a properly engineered ramp on the west side of the church to improve accessibility, especially for residents of Grace Manor and Wellington West.

Put yourself in the picture!

Last year we took pictures of parishioners as part of our Holy Rosary time capsule project. You can see the photo display at the rear of the back of the church. We are hoping to "plant" the capsule next month, but we have noticed new faces in the pews - WELCOME! If you would like to contribute a photo of you and/or your family, please bring in a small picture and give it to a greeter. We would appreciate if you could bring your photos no later than Thanksgiving weekend, October 12 and 13. Thank you. "Say cheese"!
